The building of Windsor were in the early 7th century Saxon village of Windlesora, where the recent day village of Old Windsor is. The settlement of Windsor is more accurately recognised as the “New Windsor” - the phrase “new” being used in a strictly relative sense!
Windsor Castle at the outset was erected by the illustrious William the Conqueror, owing to his assault of England in ten sixty six. The original structure was constructed from lumber with ground walls. The Castle held an obvious tactical location on a big hill above the River Thames, & was a division of a collection of palaces around London, with the Tower of London, one day’s trek away, at its core.
