Rain is blamed for thousands of accidents yearly. Many of these accidents are preventable, but are caused by drivers who don’t realize that fair- and foul-weather driving are fundamentally different.
When the road is wet, the film of the water on the asphalt causes tires to lose traction. • Don’t use cruise control. If you hydroplane, there’s the chance your car could actually accelerate. Cruise control also allows drivers to be less vigilant and to take their foot away from the pedals not a great idea when reaction time is so important.
• Turn on your headlights, even when there’s a light sprinkle. It helps you see the road, and more importantly, it helps other motorists see you. If your car is equipped with foglights, you may find it helpful to turn these on, as they throw a little extra light on the road while making your car easier to see.
• If it’s raining so hard that you can’t see the road or the car in front of you, pull over and wait it out.
• Brake earlier and with less force than you would normally. Not only does this increase the stopping distance between you and the car in front of you, it also lets the driver behind you know that you’re slowing down. Also, be more meticulous about using turn signals, so that other drivers know your intentions.
• Defog your windows. Rain will quickly cause your windshield to fog up. Switch on both front and rear defrosters and make sure the air conditioning is turned on. Most cars’ climate control systems will automatically engage the A/C when the windshield defrost function is selected.
• Allow for more travel time. You should plan to drive at a slower pace than normal when the roads are wet. Keep in mind that traffic is likely to be moving slower as well.
• If you start to hydroplane, don’t brake suddenly or turn the wheel, or you might spin into a skid. Release the gas pedal slowly and steer straight until the car regains traction. If you must brake, tap the brake pedal (unless you have antilock brakes, in which case you can put your foot down).

Taking a few extra precautions both before and during a drive in inclement weather, be it rain or snow will help prevent accidents and, therefore, save lives. So, remember to drive safely and buckle up!

Google has a competitive advantage. In fact, one might even say it has a franchise in web search. I wouldn’t say that. I mean, Google does have a franchise; but, it doesn’t have a monopoly on web search and never will. There are real problems with Google’s model that are often overlooked. It does a poor job of finding certain sites that are difficult to describe in keywords. For this reason, there may still be a market for web search in the form of specialized niche directories and in some of these “social search engines” (e.g., Stumble Upon) for many years to come.

I’m not suggesting any of these services will be as successful as Google; I’m sure they won’t be. I am simply pointing out that there is a difference between a need and the means by which that need is satisfied. Even as the dominant search player, Google will only have a franchise on the means (keyword search); it will not have a franchise on the need (finding stuff on the web). Also, Google can not, at present, rightly be called the dominant search player. There is no dominant player in search. Google is the leading search player. It is also the catalyst for many changes in search. But, it is not yet the dominant player in search the way McCormick (MKC) is the dominant U.S. spice producer.

Looking at McCormick’s franchise is actually a pretty good way of evaluating Google’s. Why do I say McCormick is the dominant player (domestically) in spice, but Google is not yet the dominant player in search? There are a few reasons.

McCormick has a 45% share of the U.S. retail spice market. Its closest competitor has a 12% market share. We may differ about exactly how the web search pie is carved up. But, I think we can agree that Google’s share of the market is less than 45%, and that at least two of its competitors have a share of the market greater than 12%. So, Google’s position differs from McCormick’s in two material respects (already). Google has a smaller slice of the pie, and the search market is less fragmented than the spice market.

The spice market is an upside down funnel. The few producers are at the top. They feed their products through three distribution paths: retail, industry, and restaurants. In each case, the shape of the upside down funnel remains intact, because the widening happens at the very end. The ultimate consumer of McCormick’s product doesn’t get to choose from all available spices. His choice is always indirect. He picks a grocery store, a food product, or a restaurant. Then, must choose from the spices that particular supermarket chooses to carry, or the restaurant he frequents chooses to use (and/or make available).

In search the story’s a little different. There is still something of an upside down funnel shape in search. Although, it is less pronounced than it was a few years ago. Search results are fed through dependent sites that searchers visit. But, it is the searcher who chooses the dependent sites. A few of these dependent sites account for a large part of all searches. That is very different from the spice market, where no supermarket or restaurant chain accounts for a large part of all spice consumption – none even comes close. So, the searcher has a much bigger role in choosing his search provider than the spice consumer has in choosing his spice provider. Even though it is true you are sometimes searching without knowing Google is the search provider, the situation is nothing like it is at McCormick. When eating a meal you aren’t thinking about McCormick. Quite often, however, you are using a McCormick product. Whether it was in that package of spices you used to cook a meal at home, or in that manufactured food product, or in the dish you ordered at the restaurant, you are a consuming a McCormick product.

What matters as far as the investor is concerned is that the ultimate consumer of McCormick’s product rarely makes an active, unfettered choice to consume that product over all other competing products (or even many competing products). The closest he comes to making such a choice is at the supermarket; though even there, the decision of how much shelf space to allocate to each company’s products was made for him. To use Google, the first time searcher must make an active, unfettered choice.

Finally, there is the matter of infrastructure. This consists of two parts: production and distribution. McCormick has an existing production infrastructure which is helpful as far as costs are concerned, but isn’t especially valuable. It could be duplicated by a new entrant with deep pockets. McCormick’s distribution infrastructure is almost impossible to duplicate. It is worth far more than it cost McCormick to create it. Prying McCormick’s customers (situated at the narrow of that inverted funnel) away from the company’s products would not be easy. This distribution infrastructure gives solidity to McCormick’s spice franchise in the U.S. In some instances, it will also help McCormick aboard (as some of the company’s customers are expanding globally and will be inclined to stick with McCormick in their overseas operations).

Google’s production infrastructure (the algorithm and the index) is easy to duplicate and will become even easier to duplicate in the future. There isn’t much of a barrier to entry here. Google may currently offer the best search service around, but there is no reason to believe this will always be the case. Distribution is very often the most valuable part of any franchise (it is usually the part that is hardest to duplicate).

So, the natural question is: in the world of search, if you build it will they come? Will the best search engine always attract the most searchers? Probably not. That’s good for Google, because it won’t always be the best search engine. Google has a great brand. Whatever value is in Google comes from that brand. That brand is what will keep searchers from flocking to the inevitable newer, better search engine.

All of Google’s revenues are ultimately dependant upon attracting searches. Getting those searches requires two things. First, millions of people must make the active, unfettered choice to search Google. Then, those millions of people must keep searching with Google. The brand is the key to step one. The service is the key to step two. Search customers are sticky. But, they probably aren’t as sticky as we think. It’s very easy to take immediate action on the web (just click a link). Switching away from Google isn’t like switching away from Windows.

That leaves the brand. True, when you think search, you think Google. But, is that brand worth $120 billion? No – and neither is Google.

Worse yet, what happens when you run into someone new to the home-based business they are promoting who has nothing they can offer when it comes to their success in promoting the home business and how well they have done with their online endeavors of making money online?

In researching the “work at home” keywords mentioned above, there are 73,636 daily real world searches according to Web CEO for those keywords alone. These statistics show that you can make money in work at home opportunities and it is a driving force for would be entrepreneurs to flock to the internet as a means to make money online. An even more staggering statistic is that according to Web CEO there are 36,145,000 competing web pages for these terms. That’s quite a bit of information to sort out if you are researching work at home opportunities to make money on the internet. With so much competition out there and so many web sites wanting you to visit them for your work at home needs, how can you know what home business opportunity works and which home based business idea is a flop that will leech your hard earned cash from you? With all that competition, the nature of the web as a home for the unscrupulous to take advantage of our naivety, and the lack of credible information available through such web sites, it all adds up to a dangerous combination for the would be work at home enthusiast.

Almost everyone has visions of the “Great American Dream”. And there probably isn’t a one of you reading this article that hasn’t been fed up and sick with their present job. Best of all, you don’t have to worry about the credibility of the home based business opportunity.

The next best way to realize your dreams to make money from home in a work at home business opportunity is to sell other people’s products or services. This is the tricky part where affiliate programs come to mind. This particular home business can help you make money on the internet if you are careful in the way you go about it. The first thing is to check the company’s credibility. Is it a realistic home business opportunity where you can make money, or is the company’s information so full of hype and promises that it’s just to good to be true? Keep in mind that a realistic home business opportunity takes time, effort, and money. Think of it this way. It’s like going to a job interview at a local corporation for a job you feel you are qualified for. Common sense says that you are already interested in this job. You have done the research, dressed the part, and you have spent your valuable time to get there; not to mention the amount of time you will be spending in the interview. The interviewer is professionally dressed in a business suite and shakes your hand firmly when you arrive. Before sitting down to interview you, he suddenly states “Before we can start this interview process, I need to collect $10.00 from you just to make sure you are serious about this position. We’ve had allot of ‘tire kickers’ coming through here lately and this is the only way we can make sure that you will benefit from our job position and ensure that you are really ready to accept this position”. Would you hand over the $10.00 to “prove your sincerity” or would you be insulted? Personally speaking, I would be insulted, but you are welcome to your own feelings on this subject.

The point is when you decide to promote another person’s products or services as the choice of your work at home business, you become an employee of sorts. Although you set your own hours and choose your own means of promoting their products, which makes you an independent contractor or an affiliate by definition, it’s still the same concept as the $10.00 interview. If a company has to ask you to pay money for their business opportunity so you can make money from home, then how good is the business opportunity to begin with? Legitimate and successful businesses offering a home based business opportunity have already figured expenses into their marketing budget and know that budget is tax deductible. They realize it’s a cost of doing business, and absorb that cost instead of passing it on to their work at home affiliates. The business opportunities asking you for such fees more than likely make their living by charging those fees and NOT selling the products, or services, they want you to promote. If they aren’t making their money from their own products or services then how do you expect to make money on the internet by promoting their products or services?

There are many business opportunities that will offer you additional things for their fees; like your very own hosted website. Although you are getting a website, you are getting a cookie cutter website that you can not control, and you are stuck with their design and layout. If their products or services don’t make you money, you have no means to insert additional work at home business opportunities into that site as a means to help make money online. But there’s another thing they don’t want you to know about this process, and that is that the website will not be indexed by the search engines, or if it is, it will show up in hundreds of pages listed for the same business. Worse yet, it is likely that NONE of your pages will even be shown close enough to the top to get you any real benefits from your spending; if you see any benefits at all. The other problem is that your page will look just like everyone else’s page who are promoting the same product or service. What benefit does that give you for the cash investment? You’ll do much better hosting your own web site where you can post as many work at home business opportunities as you want. By building an interesting, content rich web site, you will bring visitors to your cyber doors while being found and ranked decently by the search engines.

There is only ONE work at home business opportunity I have even found online that I have made money from, and they provide the same kind of cookie cutter web sites for free. They aren’t a get rich quick scheme, and promoting their products and services takes time, effort, and money, but they do not charge a fee for the “privilege” to promote their products. This same work at home business opportunity is one that I have actually made money through at home. Have I retired yet? Am I a millionaire? Do I drive a big fancy sports car or own my own mansion? None of the above. A slow, steady process takes time, effort, and money to pursue. Have I aggressively promoted it? No. I have sat back, placed a couple links in my site, and left the sponsor above me place some people in my downline. Yes, it is MLM.

The money I invested in this home business or work at home business opportunity? I’ve invested roughly $30.00 per month in things that my business needed already. It qualified me for the next income level for the business opportunity, and it gave me valuable tools to tweak my web site and learn to market that web site and home business opportunity more affectively. This investment was money that I was going to spend on the same tools, but I chose to buy those tools from a company I promote that was going to give me something in return for my investment; and that was affiliate checks based on sales volume. Did I mention that the cash spent was normally covered by the affiliate checks I received? That’s like getting FREE tools to promote my home business. Did I also mention that my downline is growing in this home based business? Will I tell you how much money I made? No. I won’t do that because then if you don’t make the same kind of money I do, or more, then you will say that I lied to you and that my information is just from another person pushing work at home business opportunities to make money. You will probably even think that I haven’t even really made any money using any of the programs I promote.

The point is you can make money on the internet through a work at home business opportunity IF you know which home based business to promote, how to promote it, and what to watch out for in choosing how you begin making money from home. You also need to be realistic. There is no one work at home business that is going to make EVERYONE rich. If that was the case, then why are there so few people out there that are rich? It simply doesn’t exist. Everyone is different. I will make money in ways that you will probably not. Then again, you will make money in ways that I will probably not. The point of this article is using care in the work at home business or make money at home business opportunity that you choose. Spending the time to make sure it is a good fit for you, and is something that you believe in. Failure to realize that a home based business opportunity is like any other business, and requires time, effort, and money, will almost assure that your dreams of making money at home will be fruitless. However, not all hope is lost. People who are ectomorph’s need to add more calories to their diets. Be careful not to add the calories into one or two big meals, because your body cannot use them all up as fuel to add muscle. It is a better idea to spread these calories out into 5-7 meals per day. Also watch out for what types of foods you are eating. It’s easy for people with high metabolisms to go out and eat fast food all the time, because it doesn’t affect their weight. But, when you are trying to gain muscle, eating high quality foods counts just as much as when you are trying to lose weight. You can have a fat intake up to 30% of your diet, but try to get most of it from quality fats such as fish and vegetable oils. When it comes to exercise, ectomorphs should limit their cardio activities and focus more on lifting weight. When lifting you should aim for lower reps using heavy weights. Resting between sets is important, as well as resting between workouts to give you’re muscles time to grow. The best exercises to do are heavy compound movements such as dead lifts, squats, bench press and pull downs. The main focus should be to put on mass, and worry about definition a little later.

If you belong to this category, consider yourself lucky. This is the ideal body type for bodybuilding. It is not extremely difficult for you to gain or lose weight, and you can pack on muscle quickly. People in this category should aim for 4-6 well balanced, healthy meals per day. Your fat intake should be around 20% of your daily calories, and you should try to consume 1-1.5 grams of protein per pound of body mass. Remember, just because you are blessed with the ideal body type, doesn’t mean that you can slack off by eating extra dessert and skipping workouts. As you get older and these habits become engrained, you will begin to notice trouble areas on your body, and ailing health. When you are at the gym you should strength train 2-3 times per week, and do aerobic activities either daily or every second day. Since every person is different, you should prioritize your workouts to the best of your own personal advantage.
