What’s the Air Like Up There?

The amount of people living and working at higher altitude has increased thanks to the advances we’ve made in technology with new rail, road and air systems we’ve been easily able to commute to higher climates but how is this going to affect us especially our health?

Its been estimated that in the west of the U.S alone up to 30 million people either travel or live at heights over 5000 feet. But can we function as well up there as we can at sea levels. We all know that the body requires oxygen to function, normal air contains about 2o% oxygen but as we increase in altitude the levels of oxygen lowers in proportion and we find that our lungs have to work harder to take in the same amount. The problems from lack of oxygen or altitude sickness can range from blackouts to extreme conditions of seizures and coma. The body does adapt to the changes over time by increasing the amount of red cell production but how else can our bodies be affected?

Research was done on a group of climbers who had traveled to Everest and after a year, it was found that 13 out of the 16 couldn’t tap their fingers as fast as they could before the climb, these finding wasn’t just limited to this group other studies even on elite climbers found the they also suffered this condition for between 2-10 months after climbing in high altitude.

You may be thinking, “Well that’s climbers that got nothing to do with me” but even at 12,000 ft your body’s oxygen level could be so low that if your body was like this at sea level you would be entitled to medical care.

So..what does mean to you? Should you pack your oxygen tank for that skiing weekend break? Probably not. But don’t expect your body to perform as well as it does at sea level!

Dramatically Improved Sales Begins By Being that Red Jacket in the Crowd of Gray Suits

In 2003, the Small Business Administration reported that of the 5.7 million firms in the United States only 17,000 firms employed 500 or more employees. Small business accounts for 99% of all businesses. In other words, there is a lot of gray suits standing on the same corner with you trying to get business.

Your challenge, if you decide to accept, is to discover how make yourself unique among all of those gray suits. Or better yet, how can you be the one bright red suit in that crowd of gray? Take a moment to visual yourself being that bright red suit. Look around. How do you feel?

You may be feeling pretty good, but telling yourself it’s just picture in my mind. It’s not real. But, yes it is real. Your thoughts can make it real along with this additional strategy.

When someone asks you want do you do, how do you respond? Do you tell them that you sell widgets or provide a service for widgets? HINT: That’s what all those over gray suits are saying.

Stop selling what you do be it consulting, web sites, professional services, cars, whatever! And start selling results!

Can you share in 30 seconds or less the results that “sell” your clients to “buy from you”? As the old expression goes, “no one likes to be sold, but everyone likes to buy.” Make them want to buy from you by selling your results. Very quickly, your mental image of being the ONLY Red Suit in a crowd of gray will quickly materialize and your results will double as well.

Using Media and PR to Your Advantage.

Lights…camera…ACTION.

That’s what often happens when people think of using media for advertising or other promotional purposes. It’s the focus on ‘action’ that often means the results are somewhat less than expected. A bit of planning can greatly improve your chances of success.

Before you contact any media outlet there are a few things you should think about:

1) Choose the right media.

2) Make sure you have an interesting story (or advertisement).

3) Treat media contacts with respect.

Here’s some advice to help you use media wisely and improve your results.

1) Choose the right media.

>> Press (newspapers - daily, weekly, paid or free) -

* Great for targeting ‘now’ buyers who are looking for current specials and promotions.

* Generally reaches an older demographic.

>> Television (metropolitan or regional) -

* Huge reach potential ensures many people have the opportunity to see your advertisement. Although often there is much wastage as many viewers are not in the target audience.

* Combination of visual & audio is ideal for ’show and tell’ demonstrations.

* Issues will be more likely to be covered if they can be explained or highlighted with the use of ‘visuals’ - live footage, photos, pictures, interviews etc.

>> Radio -

* Due to the diversity of radio station music/talk formats you can more easily identify demographics of audience.

* Higher frequency can be achieved due to relatively low cost of medium.

* May add credibility to small firms as audio presentation can be professionally produced at a low cost.

>> Direct Mail -

* Can create high impact material with detailed information.

* Ability to target individual users and personalize message.

* Responses can be easily tracked and measured.

>> Email -

* Very short lead/production time. May use text, HTML, rich media format.

* Can easily be personalised using in-house information.

* Ideal to attract customers back to a web site for additional details and ordering.

* Quick response and feedback possible.

>> Catalogues/Flyers -

* There are many types of catalogues. Choose a style and frequency to suit your product, audience and budget - e.g. paper stock, use of colour, photographic style, layout, topic etc.

* Can promote a range of complementary products in a themed environment.

2) Make sure you have an interesting story (or advertisement). If you are creating an advertisement consider these points:

- - Do you have a headline that is benefit oriented?

- - Do you quickly spell out the benefits in the first few lines of copy?

- - Are all contact details legible and correct?

- - Use a picture to add interest.

- - Can you use colour?

- - Your company logo should appear at the bottom of the ad, not the top.

- - Where is your ad going to appear in the publication:

* Which issue?

* Which page? Left or right hand side?

* Is there an associated feature/editorial opportunity?

* Where are your competitors positioned?

If you are submitting a media release or contacting a journalist/reporter for coverage:

- - Make sure you have covered the 5 W’s:

* Who, What, Where, When, Why.

- - Have your contact details at the bottom of the release.

- - Make sure you have a credible ‘news’ angle. Use numbers, trends, emotional situations, quotes from people involved etc to add interest for a reporter.

- - Write concisely without using industry jargon. The release should be 400-500 words maximum.

- - Try and send your release to a specific individual, reporter or journalist.

3) Treat media contacts with respect.

Most people in the media work to revolving deadlines. Make life a bit easier for your media contact by working within these deadlines, and in return you will usually receive a fair hearing.

Reporters try to maintain an objective approach to stories. You may think your new product release or upcoming event is hugely important. But don’t imagine the media will always see it your way. Give them a reason to get excited but stick to the facts.

If you are seen to be too pushy your story will often be ignored. Don’t harass the reporter with numerous phone calls, emails, faxes etc. It is OK to call the reporter first and check their beat and ask how and when they prefer information to be supplied. For example, many newsrooms will not accept emails with attachments due to virus concerns. Then send your (properly prepared) information, and wait for them to contact you.

In summary, to get the best results:

* Choose the right media

* Write your material to be effective

* Contact the right person, and

* Submit your information in an appropriate way.

Oh…and don’t forget,

Lights…camera…ACTION - using the media should be fun.

Home Theater, DVI Cable Information and Help

So What is DVI? DVI Stands for Digital Visual Interface. DVI is the digital interface standard created by the DDWG (Digital Display Working Group). Led by Compaq, Fujitsu, Silicon Image, Hewlette Packard, NEC, Intel and IBM, the DDWG’s main objective is to “address the industry’s requirements for a digital connectivity specification for high-performance PCs and digital displays.”

With the need to accommodate both digital and analog monitors, this new digital interface standard was created to convert analog signals into digital signals. DVI’s High bandwidth capabilities make it ideal for HDTV connections. Also available in dual link, DVI can reach higher resolutions still.

Using the pictures on the right, you can determine the type of connection you need, be it DVI-D, or DVI-I. To determine the actual signal being used you will have to consult your manual for the device being connected. For more information concerning DVI:

DVI-D Digital. Connectors on DVI-D do not have the 4 additional pins, these are meant for carrying Digital signals only. Digital must be connected to Digital and Analog to Analog. While you can plug a DVI-D cable into a DVI-I socket, both devices you are connecting must support Digital signal format. Analog to Digital will not work.

DVI-I Analog or Digital. Connectors are basically the same as DVI-D with the exception of 4 added pins. You’ll notice both have 3 rows of pins to the left, and one horizontal pin to the right. The DVI-I connection has 4 additional pins, 2 on top and 2 on bottom. These pins are used to carry the needed signals for RGBHV analog video. (Red, Green, Blue and Horizontal). You can use DVI-I on both DVI-D and Analog connections, but remember, an analog device will not be compatible with a Digital device. For more pictures of these items visit:

http://www.tca-inc.net/dvi_info.html

Adapters HD15 to DVI-I (VGA to analog) adapters exist to connect your analog device to a analog display through DVI connection.

Remember that while DVI-I is usable for Digital display, the extra 4 pins make it usable for Analog as well. The needed adapters is available in our store.

The Foundation of Martial Arts: Yoga

At first glance, Martial Arts and Yoga seem like opposing forces and philosophies, but these two health maintenance systems have more in common than meets the eye. For a moment, consider the similarities between Tai Chi and Hatha Yoga. Within the warm up, you notice very similar movement, philosophy, and principles.

Why does “climb the mountain” stance look so much like Warrior I posture? Is it coincidence, luck, or a common link? Why does Kundalini have movements that resemble punching, kicking, and martial arts foot work? Are Kung Fu forms an extension of Vinyasa? Each has been referred to as meditation in motion.

The place of origin, for most Asian martial arts, is agreed to be the Shaolin Temple. Apparently, the monks at the Shaolin temple had become very proficient at meditation, but had not developed a health maintenance system to sufficiently train their bodies.

In the sixth century A.D., Bhoddidharma, a visiting Buddhist monk, from India, began to teach the monks at the Shaolin temple, in Hunan Province, a form of physical health maintenance, which is believed to be Yoga. It is also said that Boddidharma was a member of the Warrior caste. Therefore, he should also have had working knowledge of Kalarippayat; an indigenous Indian Martial art.

Boddidharma is said to have reached a level of meditation that was very advanced. The body can be trained to a point, but the mind should also be trained as well. This is a cornerstone to all martial arts training. How often have we heard about the three conflicts of mind, body, and spirit?

This is why each martial arts school should encourage a Yoga class. The healing aspect of Yoga is very beneficial to all martial artists - regardless of their style. Some martial arts centers have incorporated Yoga as part of the class schedule. The reason was to attract mothers, who were hanging around the waiting area, to pick up their kids.

While there is a demand for Yoga classes among women, some martial artists, both male and female, will join in to feel the healing benefits, meditate, increase flexibility, and much more. The fact is, much like martial arts, there are many styles of Yoga.

Some are very physical and demand a lot of endurance. So, there is no end to the possibilities of where the need for Yoga can fit within a martial arts studio. After all these years, it looks like Yoga and martial arts will be together again.

Anthony Loeff nonprofit volunteer is testing screen readers for people suffering from blindness

The console-based Oralux Linux distribution ships with three screen-reading environments: Emacspeak, Yasr and Speakup. Only a small fraction of this population, when compared to the sighted community, have Internet access.

Linux distributions for the blind include Oralux and Adriane Knoppix. This year Anthony Loeff medical volunteer is reporting software for visually impaired Screen readers are a form of assistive technology potentially useful to people who are blind, visually impaired, or learning disabled, often in combination with other AT such as screen magnifiers. Later versions of Microsoft Windows include an Accessibility Wizard and Magnifier for those with partial vision, and Microsoft Narrator, a simple screen reader. The latter developed in part by Knopper who has a visual impairment. Access technology such as screen readers and Screen magnifiers enable the blind to use mainstream computer applications. There are also open source screen readers, such as the Linux Screen Reader for GNOME and NonVisual Desktop Access for Windows.

A screen reader is a software application that attempts to identify and interpret what is being displayed on the screen.

Web browsers, word processors, icons and windows and email programs are just some of the applications used successfully by screen reader users. A persons choice of screen reader is dictated by many factors, including platform and the role of organizations like charities, schools, and employers.

The movement towards greater web accessibility is opening a far wider number of websites to adaptive technology, making the web a more inviting place for visually impaired surfers. The open source GNOME desktop environment long included Gnopernicus and now includes Orca. The primary audience for such applications is those who have difficulty reading because of learning disabilities or language barriers. Further, using a screen reader is, according to some users, considerably more difficult than using a GUI and many applications have specific problems resulting from the nature of the application. Screen readers can be assumed to be able to access all display content that is not intrinsically inaccessible.

Recent versions of Microsoft Windows come with the rather basic Narrator. Most legally blind people 77 percent do not use computers. The rest have some vision, from light perception alone to relatively good acuity. Experimental approaches in sensory substitution are beginning to provide access to arbitrary live views from a camera.

Indeed functionality remains limited compared to equivalent desktop applications, the major benefit is to increase the accessibility of said websites. This interpretation is then represented to the user with text-to-speech, sound icons, or a braille output. Almost 18 percent of those deemed legally blind, by any measure, have no vision. While Apple Mac OS X includes VoiceOver, a more feature-rich screen reader. More and more, screen readers are being bundled with operating system distributions.

Screen reader choice is contentious: differing priorities and strong preferences are common. The Macintosh OS also comes with a built-in screen reader, called VoiceOver.
