Would you agree that the majority of those in America’s pews who call themselves “Christian” don’t REALLY believe in “The Church”? Shocking thought, but I believe it’s true.

Very few Christians ever give a second thought to the fact that the word “Church” (coming from the Greek word ekklesia, meaning: “the called out ones”) ever refers to anything other than a building made of brick and mortar, OR that the word refers to their own denomination or their own particular house of worship.

So what DOES the majority of American Christendom believe in if they don’t believe in “The Church”? Simply put, the majority merely believe in “Religion.” Ok, so what’s that? Webster’s Dictionary defines it, in part, as “a system of religious beliefs.” System? How can the word “system” have anything at all to do with the beautiful Bride of Christ, a living, breathing entity? She’s not a cyborg, after all. No, it sounds like so much hoop-jumping to me; a list of do’s and don’ts intended to manage this huge “religion” we call “Christianity.”

THE ONLY GOOD CHRISTIAN IS A DEAD CHRISTIAN

Problem is, Christianity is not a religion; it’s a new lifestyle based upon RELATIONSHIP between the Creator and those He created. Sadly, most who claim to be Christians prefer religion to a new life. Two reasons: we get so comfortable with even the worst of our behaviors, habits and addictions that we cannot fathom life without them ans, secondly, to live a new life, we’ve got to die. Funny, the one thing God and Satan have in common is that they’re BOTH trying to kill us. In other words, the only good Christian is a dead Christian; dead to sin, alive to God through Christ (Rom 6:10-11).

Regarding religion, we have to remember that there are three types of doctrine referred to in Scripture: the doctrine of devils, the doctrine of man and the doctrine of Christ and of God. Thinking Christians ought to ask why their group teaches this or that, why this or that tradition gets so much attention and from whence this or that doctrine actually came.
There’s only one thing more powerful than the Word of God: that’s the traditions of man. Jesus said our traditions make the Word of God of no effect (Matt 15:6).

Some powerful traditions, huh?

What else does Webster’s say? It traces the word ‘religion’ back to the Latin word religio meaning “to tie, to bind, to restrain.” The word is actually a combination of two words, re (to return) and ligare from which we get our word ligature, means “to bind.” In other words, a return to bondage. Perhaps no word more accurately describes the man-centered, performance-based, reward-punishment systems that men have devised to earn God’s acceptance and favor than this word “religion.”
Hmmm. Jesus said He came to set us free. Interesting. The Scripture also asserts that “where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”

It appears that “religion” cannot co-exist with a relationship with Christ. No wonder Jesus was always butting heads with the most religious people of His day.

PASS OUT THE BLUE RIBBONS!

As a whole, the religious nature of mankind actually PREFERS a hoop-jumping rating system by which to position ourselves and determine our own progress as part of that system. We judge ouselves with ourselves. We forget that, according to Isaiah, “…we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags,” (Is 64:6). God is not impressed with our “good” deeds. In fact, Scripture declares that “there is no one righteous; not even one,” (Rom 3:10)

Doesn’t that run contrary to everything we’re taught throughout our secular lives? Aren’t we, as kids, awarded gold stars and encouraged to win blue ribbons? As adults, we strive for recognition and promotion. We love displaying our trophies and plaques and stuffing our scrapbooks with newspaper clippings. How are we ever to understand that, where God is concerned, our best is never good enough? Face it, if ALL have sinned and fall short of God’s glory, then EVERYONE, including the “holiest” and most piously “nice” person who ever walked planet Earth, needs a Savior. Not a soul has EVER been exempt.

Not even one.

The Good news? God provided a Savior – Jesus. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life,” (Jn 3:16).

Whosoever? YOU-soever!

BEING CHRISTIANS 24/7

If we were all being honest with ourselves, most people who are warming pews across the nation would have to admit that “The Church” – the ekklesia – rarely enters their minds. What the masses DO believe in – whether they recognize it or not – is a Body of Christ that is malformed at best. They would most likely agree that gatherings like theirs (especially amidst their OWN denomination) surely must represent the best the Christian world has to offer.

What most would NOT acknowledge is that “The Church” is anything more than another of our nation’s many subcultures. Truth is, it’s MUCH more than that; we are supposed to be a COUNTER-culture who merely SETTLES for subculture status.

We are the bearers of the Ark of the New Covenant, carrying with us a radically new orientation toward the world. We hold a revolutionary power whose source, Jesus Himself, was a radical revolutionary. Its by His power that WE have been empowered to penetrate the world in order to help it recognize its own reason for existence. Most Christians do not see themselves as the special people of God who have a secular task to perform for the world Jesus came to set free. The mindset of most is that we have a spiritual life on one hand and a secular life on the other. Sadly, we do a good job of keeping them separated.

Too good.

THE CHURCH IN TIMES OF NEED

Did Jonah step up to the plate and warn Ninevah of impending disaster? Yes. Did Paul respond to the Mecedonian call? Sure thing. Why is it that The Church in America isn’t instantly ready to assist during times of tragedy such as, let’s say, hurricane Katrina? We can blame the President, the Governor, the Mayors, the National Guard and FEMA all we want to. But we, The Church, must NOT miss these opportunities to harvest souls, not merely making converts but DISCIPLES as Jesus commanded.

We must peel back the onion skins and get to the heart of these matters. If we, The Church, don’t learn from history, we’re doomed to repeat it, yes? Our nation is only as strong as The Church, after all. As a whole, The Church is not very strong. Let’s face it, too often we project “…a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof …,” (1 Timothy 3:5). We are SUPPOSED to be the world’s change agent but we’re content to play Church rather than BE the Church because we don’t understand the PURPOSE of the Church. Hint: it’s MUCH more than merely “being nice” or, too often, getting downright “professional” at being spiritual. Knowing when to say “Amen!” or sit, stand, kneel and recite memorized invocations is more CHURCHIANITY than Christianity and has very little impact on anyone but the Christian religious adherent.

Statistics reveal how few Christians believe in the teachings of Scripture, even among the clergy. We really cannot expect any more of “Churchianity” than we are currently observing. Don’t get me wrong, where Katrina is concerned, I’m proud of the disaster relief effort going forth here in the USA. My wife and I have pitched in ourselves. But it’s not only Christians who are lending a hand in the relief effort. I heard that even Fidel Castro has even offered to help. This recent disaster CAN be the impetus for a great revival IF The Church will take people in and disciple them according to Scripture rather than stepping aside and allowing the government to deal with them; rather than merely housing them and being kind to them.

Fidel has offered to do that much.

SAD sufferers normally feel depressed. It is normal for SAD sufferers to contract infections and illnesses during the winter season since their immune systems usually weaken.

SAD is a common occurrence among people who live far from the equator. There have also been studies claiming that SAD may be passed on to other family members, though no definite conclusions have been made regarding this matter.

There are many ways that God enters into judgment with both individuals and entire nations. There is only one reason why he enters into judgment and that is rampant immorality and sin. The nations have followed the same path as ancient Israel. Like Israel they sought God for a time, but when they were secure and full they started backsliding into every imaginable sin. God then sent prophets, preachers and messengers of every kind and description. If their warnings went unheeded, which they did in most cases the judgments given by the messengers came against them.

When the people were tired of the lack of goods or the captivity or the warfare they began to seek the prophets and messengers again, but this time for the means to get right with God again. A microcosmic example of this in our recent past would be what happened right after the destruction of the Twin Towers in New York on nine eleven. People started going back to church in droves and church attendance reached record levels. But already we are showing signs of slipping again. The call to defeat terrorism by just returning to what we were doing before was taken more seriously than the call to return to God.

When a people, Jew or Gentile begin seeking God again their lot usually improves depending on how serious they are. This same vicious cycle is repeated over and over throughout history by almost every nation or people on the earth. Judgments come when people pass over the mark God has set for them. God is patient and slow to anger and it is amazing that he lets them go as far as he does in some cases. The longer a nation or people persist in their collective backsliding the more it strengthens them to continue in that pathway. Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is firmly set in them to do evil. Ecclesiastes 8: 11

The second coming will surprise more people than it will please. The promise of his second coming seems a long way behind us, and some would like to believe that it will not take place for several more millennia. What seems like a very long delay is one of the chief reasons they will he caught off guard and it is one of the world’s major excuses for unbelief. The apostle Peter covers this in 2Peter 3:3-4… Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming! For since the fathers fallen asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

How God judges sinful nations is the greater variable than why. He will use anything at his disposal in nature such as floods, drought, wild animals, plagues and general pestilence. He also uses internal collapses in the infrastructure and the financial well being of a nation. One of the more common ways he enters into judgment, is to bring another nation against the violators in all out warfare. He uses one nation’s fury in all out war or surprise attack to chasten the offender or to send a wake up call. What is most amazing of all is that the nation that is doing the judging may not even be as righteous or Godly as the nation being judged. The ancient Babylonians were not lovers of the God of Israel at all, but God used them to judge Israel. Not only did they come under chastisement from this pagan nation but the fact that they were so idolatrous was particularly offensive to the self righteous Jews of that time. Babylon’s godlessness was part of the humiliation attached to the judgment and they knew it.

A major difference at the end times is that no nation is in a position to judge any other nation. They have all gone into perdition. They all have decided to become part of the new world order and follow the antichrist. Since there are no nations able to enter into judgment for God, He has to do it himself. In other words at that time the whole world has passed the mark God has set, and only God can enter the judgment. It is the worldwide fall of nations that is the primary factor or what actually precipitates the second coming of Christ.

Mahavira: 24th Tirthankara of Jainism vardhamana Mahavira

Vardhamana Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism was the last of the series of 24th Tirthankars in Jainism Dharma. Jainism as we understand today is primarily focused on the teachings and essence of Bhagwan Mahavira. Why?

Right from the Times of the first Tirthankara Rishabdeva (aka Adinatha) nothing and up till the 23rd Tirthankara… the tenets and the teachings of Jainism did not exist in the society as in the Times of Mahavira. It was only in the Times of Mahavira that Jainism took its roots.

The precipitation of all the teachings right from the first Tirthankara Rishabdeva (aka Adinatha) and up till the 23rd Tirthankara Parshvanath occurred only when Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara arrived on the scene.

If we are to mix hydrogen and oxygen gas to make drinking water then most of us would be least concerned with the process itself. It is only when the two gases meet and the water is formed… we recognize the process. It was not the process but the end result we are after!

In life it is the goal and not the journey which matters most. Once we have a goal in sight… to be able to traverse the journey would not be difficult! What use is of the journey where there is no goal?

Mahavira came about 1000 years after the advent of Lord Krishna who gave to the humanity the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita. If Bhagavad Gita comprises of 18 fundamentals of life then… Jainism as propounded by Mahavira may contain only 15 fundamentals.

In the Times of Mahavira even these 15 fundamentals were difficult to assimilate. The society had started degenerating from the Times of Lord Krishna.

In the present times one can often find people quoting that it is difficult to reach the level of Swami Vivekananda… what to talk of becoming Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa or reaching the stage of Bhagwan Mahavira himself.

As the society loses its value… people tend to become more and more materialistic. Mahavira gave to the society the fundamentals of Ahimsa and the doctrine of Anekantavada. These two realities of life imbibed in the general masses a feeling of compassion and also Vairagya (Asceticism).

It is Mahavira and Mahavira alone who taught us the real meaning of unity in diversity. It was Mahavira who taught us that even Lions and the buffaloes can live together in harmony. Whether we believe in the teachings of Mahavira or not… it is a confirmed fact of life that without the practice of Ahimsa in real life… the life itself loses its meaning!

Mahavira also taught us that the total humanity including the various other forms of life can always live-in harmony. It was the fundamentals of Anekantavada which made it possible for mankind to live a harmonious life. Now, what is Anekantavada?

If I were standing on the first floor of the house and someone in the house on the ground floor called for me then, what would one say “call him down from above”. Now a person standing on the second floor of the house would call for me as “call him above”.

How is it possible that both the narrations are correct? As per Mahavira it is the fundamental of Anekantavada which confirms that both the statements are correct. The perspectives may be different but the doctrine of Anekantavada by Mahavira relies upon the principle of logistical conclusions.

In the present society where Religions are numerous… as per the doctrine of Anekantavada preached by Mahavira… all can live-in harmony for it is only the viewpoint that may be different but the goals of all the Religions is always the same. All man Gods like Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ and Prophet Mohammed preached the same.

Mahavira was instrumental in precipitating what we know as Jainism. Mahavira was the one who bared it all in the end. Mahavira was able to prove to the society that every human being can reach the ultimate goal of life… become an enlightened soul (self realized atman).

Mahavira contrary to Jesus Christ never stated that normal human beings can not reach the level of Jesus Christ himself. Mahavira always stated that it is within the means of every human being to become Mahavira in one’s lifetime.

According to Mahavira, the essence of Jainism is one who has won himself… one who transcends all the barriers of the physical mundane life and crosses over to the spiritual end of life! The word Jainism is derived from the root word “Jina”… meaning one who has realized his real self and merges his identity with the bigger whole, God the Almighty himself.

Jainism is not a religion and the followers of Mahavira and Jainism beliefs are never referred to as following Mahavirism. Jainism has always been preached and considered as “a way of life”. It is a Dharma following which one can become enlightened like Mahavira in one’s lifetime.

It is only Jainism which believes in the fact that the body of a human being is a garb for the soul (atman) within. The Tirthankars in Jainism wore no clothes as they had realized that before reaching the state of enlightenment it was necessary for won to discard the physical manifestations in life.

Jainism as preached by Mahavira is a Dharma which believes and practices true renunciation… getting free of all the attachments and the karma in the physical mode of life. Mahavira made it absolutely clear that before one can hope to reach the highest pedestal of spiritual life… we need to free ourselves of all the attachments and bondages of physical life.

In the present times… compared to Buddhism the teachings of Mahavira do not find many takers. While talking to a publisher friend of mine… the gory fact was put together… it was in the ratio of 1:10 that the Jainism literature was being published. The reason… it was very difficult to follow the doctrine of Mahavira in the present times.

As it was easier to follow Buddhism… we have massive literature on Buddhism available today. No denying the fact that following the dictates of Mahavira in the present times is a really difficult task but not unachievable for the ultimate goal of life of every human being is becoming a Mahavira in the end.

Becoming a Mahavira is the cosmic goal of every Jiva (living being)! Whether we follow the teachings of Mahavira and become a Mahavira in the present life or in the next manifestation is totally dependent upon our karma in the present life.
