Malignant Mesothelioma a Infrequent Cancer

Malignant mesothelioma is a uncommon cancer of the tissues that line the person’s interior organs. Nearly 2,000 brand new occurrences are diagnosed each year in the whole United States. How To Use Grapefruit to Lower High Blood Pressure

Heart disease is the number one killer of women. If you are a women, and even if your not, here is what you need to start doing.

The food you eat is critical in determining if you will have high blood pressure and if you can lower it. Eating less meat and eating more fruits and vegetables can lower your blood pressure.

High blood pressure occurs when fats, cholesterol, and nutrients in the food you eat start to accumulate along your artery walls. This narrowing of your arteries restricts the flow of your blood, increases your blood pressure and making you more susceptible to heart attacks and strokes.

If you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or high trigylcerides, grapefruit has been found to reduce the effects of these conditions.

So which is better yellow or red grapefruit? Well, in a study made where people who had a history of high cholesterol, those that ate the red grapefruit had the most effect in lower their blood pressure. The yellow also lowered blood pressure but not as much as the red grapefruit.

It was found in this study that grapefruit had a better effect in lowering blood pressure than statin drugs.

Red grapefruit are extra high in anti-oxidants and these nutrients are able to reduce your trigylcerides: the yellow are not.

Eat the red grapefruit when available and when it is not eat the yellow. Eat at least one – two per day. If you eat just before your meal or drink a glass of fresh grapefruit, you can expect to lose 1 or 2 lbs during the month. By eating 2 grapefruits a day expect to lose more weight.

Eating grapefruit has many health benefits, but one other is in controlling your insulin level. Studies have shown that those that eat grapefruits have lower insulin and glucose levels in their blood.

It is believed by researchers that grapefruit enzymes help to control insulin increases that happen after you eat. These enzymes help digest your food better and this results in less nutrients being stored as fat.

Grapefruit has also been found to be caner preventative. It’s the phytonutrients – antioxidants – and especially lycopene that has been found helpful in preventing cancer.

Grapefruits are high in fiber, vitamin C, Vitamin A, and antioxidants – carotenoids, limonoid glucosides, flavonones.

Tea, Spirituality and The Japanese Tea Ceremony: An Interview with Michael Ricci

Michael Ricci was weeding the Tea House garden when I arrived for our interview. We sat in front of the little tea “hut” at Buddhist-inspired Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado where in just one hour I would scoot through the tiny doorway on my knees to participate in my first Japanese Tea Ceremony along with his students and other newcomers.

Michael found the Tea Ceremony (Chado) through Japanese Zen Buddhism. “I started reading about Zen and I kept coming across references to tea. I called up Naropa and they happened to be offering their first class on it through the extended studies program. There was one position left. I came and immediately fell in love with it.” He adds, “It seemed like the perfect way to understand more about Zen and start doing something contemplative alongside my meditation. It was a spiritual path that made sense to me.”

“Everything the Japanese do turns into an art, and that’s the way they treat tea. Keeping the tradition alive is serious, and the rules are very important to them. The Japanese Tea Ceremony incorporates almost all of the traditional Japanese arts–flower arranging, calligraphy, laquerware, ceramics, bamboo, wood. I’m an artist so I just fell in love with all of it.”

Michael spent two years studying Tea with Hobart Bell, head of the Boulder Zen Center before being accepted to study at Urasenke Headquarters in Kyoto under the guidance of 15th Generation Grand Tea Master of the Urasenke lineage of tea, which is the largest practicing tea lineage in the world. Here he was immersed in traditional Japanese culture and etiquette, learning all facets of Japanese Tea. But he had only scratched the surface after one year of study, so he stayed another year and a half. After that, he says, “I moved into a Zen Buddhist temple and trained alongside the monks. I didn’t take vows, but I lived the life of a monk for 6 months.”

It is from this humble state of mind that Michael shares his knowledge through his tea classes and his art.

“There are two ways to enjoy tea between host and guest. The first, Chaji, is a formal several-course meal that can last four to five hours. The abbreviated version, called Chakai, is simply a sweet and a bowl of tea.”

Michael was teaching the day I was there, so each of his students performed the short version tea ceremony one by one over four hours’ time.

There are no distractions inside the teahouse. Michael explains, “You’re sitting on your knees in a very small room for 4 hours in a very intimate atmosphere. The dialogue is stripped down. Everything is designed to keep focus on the moment and to completely forget about the world outside of the teahouse.”

“The little door, called nijiriguchi , was designed for everybody to bow their heads as they enter the tea room. Shoguns and Samari might be sitting next to peasants. They would have to take off their swords and leave them outside, bow their heads and humble themselves because inside the tea room everybody is the same.” Nowadays, he says, we take off our rings, jewelry and watches. “Anything that says ‘This is Me,’ or that takes us outside of the tearoom. Tea Ceremony is a timeless realm in a bottle.”

The ceremony is an expression of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility through each deeply symbolic gesture–a graceful choreography between host and guest.

Koicha is abowl of ‘thick tea,’ made with a lot of Matcha (powdered green tea) and less hot water. One bowl is shared between all 3 to 5 guests. The host serves the tea to ‘First Guest,’ (who is not a beginner and can model tea etiquette). First Guest bows to Second Guest and says in Japanese “Excuse me for taking my tea before you.” Second Guest bows, too. First Guest drinks their share, turns and wipes the bowl’s edge in a specific way with a paper napkin, and then passes it to Second Guest. Michael says, ” Koicha is the most intimate part of the gathering, sharing the bowl like that.” An initiation of sorts, I thought.

‘Thin Tea,’ Usucha , is more water and less tea, but only about three and a half sips. “It’s just enough to quench your thirst. It’s powder and it’s not steeped. It is whisked,” Michael explains. ” During ‘Thin Tea’ the host makes each guest a bowl of tea from the same bowl. They each take turns first eating their sweet then drinking the tea.” First Guest receives the bowl of tea, drinks it, passes it back to the host who wipes it, cleans it, and gives the next guest their bowl of tea in that same bowl. A watery sweet made of bean paste was served to refresh us that summer day.

Soon each guest in turn examined the utensils–scoop, bowl and whisk–and inspected the bright green valley in the bowl from which a portion of Matcha had been skillfully scooped by the host when the tea was prepared. As the host retreated to the tiny kitchen, the conversation between guests turned to appreciation of the warm weather, the tea, the teahouse. My body tingled with a feeling of wellbeing. Was it the L-theanine in the green tea? Or a result of paying close attention to every movement?

My mind arrived at stillness, like tea leaves settling on the bottom of a cup.

The Healing Arts: 18 Things Healers Learn, #2; Wherever You Are, You Were Led There

One life intersecting with another is a momentous occasion. In the context of the role of Caregiver and Recipient, the intersection appears to be about the Caregiver providing something for the Recipient. In reality, it’s a two-way street.

How many times has your life connected with another’s and then taken a different turn? Most often, this goes unnoticed because the influences are measured in minute subtleties. In truth, it happens all the time.

If you’ve ever spent any time on the ocean, odds are you’ve gotten the sense that there is nothing on this earth that is not affected by everything else. A gust of wind that happened over another continent years ago put a number of molecules of water in motion that went on to affect each molecule around them. The energy spread, influencing everything in its path until whatever is left of that initiating energy ends up lapping at your feet. In that journey, the connection is obvious. Energy moves molecule moves molecule, over time and place, until you’re touched.

Why would it be less so with the human experience?

Conceptually, we’re not much more than elaborate molecules bumping into each other and in a constant state of changing trajectories as a result. We just happen to measure our directional changes as influences on our experience of life, and work under the assumption that we have the free-will to choose a significant part of our experience. Regardless, essentially, like with everything else, our main function has to do with responding to stimuli.

Sometimes, the influence of a particular intersection with another human being spins one or the other or both into a new direction that’s quite obvious. Any tragic accident is a clear reflection of this. Those notable occasions hint at how that is the way things are there is nothing that happens to us that does not shift our direction and the direction of those around us. Accidents are the same concept, only writ large.

No matter where you are in space and time, your whole life has conspired to get you to that point. Taking it one step further, the complete history of the Earth and mankind comes together, in you, in each moment, and the future of everything steps off from there as well.

It is as if each moment is a vacuum which you are called upon to fill. Had anything been different, you can sense you would have ended up filling another space that called out for you. The same is no less true with the other person or people with whom your life intersects.

Balance, it appears, though always sought, is only really attained in fleeting moments. If you ask an airline pilot how often is the plane she’s flying off-course, she’s likely to reply 99 percent of the time. Every moment in life is a matter of course correction. This is true from the cell to the organism to the planet to the Universe itself.

Wherever there is a vacuum, something gets pulled in to fill the void and tweak the balance a tad one way or the other. In one sense, time itself is composed of innumerable voids awaiting fulfillment. People come together in moments of time and fill those voids. In the process they are collaborators in forming a new future with a slightly different balance.

To take yourself out of that equation and work under the assumption that it is only the others’ needs that calls you to them in the healing process is to deny that you are a part of the Great Mystery. In every moment, there is something there for you, as well.

The sum total of your life has led you to this place in time, where or whenever it might be. It has given you a background, skills, practice, understandings, and relationships to draw from. It has provided you an opportunity to use any number of them, at your choice. The sum total of the other’s life has led him or her to this place in time in the same way. Therefore, the sum total of both your lives has collectively put you together, and is now asking of each of you to do something with that moment; to both be affected by it AND affect the moments to come.

In essence, you are (like everything and everybody else is) an element of existence that not only seeks balance for itself, but is an AGENT of balance for everything else. In the Grand Scheme of things nothing that happens in any moment of time or place is about anything but the seeking of balance.

It is not about constantly having to know why yours and someone else’s lives have been put together. It’s enough to assume that wherever you are you were led there by a history so unique that it sought that moment to express itself as an agent of balance. The logical next step is to work on the assumption that the same is true with any one with whom you are in connection.

From that point on, all that remains is the exploration.

12)One should donate

13)One should pay respect to cross roads, offer religious oblation called bali

14)One should honor guests

15)One should offer ‘pindas’ ( meaning a ball of lump rice to the manes) to the departed ancestors

18)One should envy in action but not in the results thereof

27)One should avoid places with dirty apparel, bones, thorns, impure hair, chaff, garbage, ash, fragments of earthen vessels and the places of bath and worship

29)One should be friendly to all creatures, reconcile the angry, console the frightened, be merciful to the poor, be truthful and be predominantly of compromising nature and tolerant towards un palatable words uttered by others

30)One should be controller of intolerance

31)One should be peaceful disposition and conquer the very roots of attachment and hatred.

These thirty one acts will prevent any psychosomatic disturbances. Further, Caraka also prescribed the code of general ethics which are to be followed for a healthy long life. These will be enumerated in the next article.

Detox Diet

The phrase “detox diets” specifically refers to a class of diets that help in discharging toxins accumulated in the body. One of the major reasons for a detox diet is overeating during special occasions.

The human body is exposed to toxins of undefined nature either from the food they eat, the environment, and its own waste. As these toxins increase, the human body is exposed to a number of illnesses like weight gain, cellulite, headaches, dull skin, fatigue, aches and pains, and a lowered immunity.

Detox diets are said to be very helpful in purging the toxins from the body. In a detox diet, people consume only fruits, vegetables and unprocessed natural food. Fresh homemade vegetables are also used along with a detox diet. Detox diets are said to destroy the environmental toxins contained in water, food, and the air that are found in the human body.

The ingredients of almost all detox diets can be described as liver tonics (milk thistle, barberry, dandelion), digestive aids (ginger, globe artichoke, peppermint) and laxatives (fennel, Psyillum) and diuretics (birch, dandelion). Some Detox diets consist of lemon in warm water, flaxseeds, and bentonite clay for breakfast. Lunch consists of salads of tomato, lettuce, cucumber, peppers, corn, kidney beans, low fat cheese, and peas. For dinner, the detox diet recommends apples, low fat free yogurt and fruits like apple, oranges, nectarines, and peaches.

A detox diet contains approximately 600-750 Kcals per day. It strictly forbids meat, fish, alcohol, and stimulants like coffee. Detox diets are known to make a person feel better, even lighter, but there is little scientific evidence of any good coming out of it.

The basic flaw with detox diets is their concept that meat has a higher level of toxins than fruits and vegetables. In reality, some fruits like cabbage and onions have high toxic levels, while fish and meat have fewer toxins. The liver can effectively break down and eliminate toxins under a protein high diet.

A healthy daily diet contains fruits, vegetables, and meat in equal portions. It should contain meat, dairy products, carbohydrates, and portions of fruits and vegetables.

Hypnosis As A Medical Tool

Clinical hypnosis has been my professional focus for more
than a quarter-century. Even though I am a Certified
Registered Nurse Anesthetist and have held executive
positions both as a nurse and a hospital executive director
there is no treatment tool I know of that is more powerful
in helping people control their bodies, their feelings and
their lives than hypnosis. Hypnosis is a fascinating domain
of clinical research and practice that involves the study of
how seemingly ordinary people like you and I can accomplish
extraordinary things by using our minds.

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis and involves nothing more than
learning to focus your mind. All mental images thoughts and
ideas influence the body’s responses in some very special
ways. In one article I discussed the biochemical changes the
body makes just by thinking about eating a lemon. The brain
does not know that a thought or a memory is not the real thing.

Research has given us a great deal of knowledge through the
study of hypnosis on how the mind experiences both reality and
perception. What scientists discovered is that the mind cannot
tell the difference between reality and perception.

We have learned that people can learn to become so deeply
absorbed in daily life experiences that they can permit their
body to be more comfortable even when there are reasons
that perhaps they shouldn’t be. I have worked with patients
having dental procedures with Novocain, and childbirth with
no anesthetic. I have even been at a foot ball game where a
3 year old was stung on the hand twice by yellow jackets and
in only a few moments helped her take the pain completely
away. Much better than Grand Ma’s snuff use to do.

In the minds of some people the word “hypnosis” has
connotations of magic, or hocus-pocus. The media misrepresents
it when they show stunts with audience members clucking like
chickens or doing an Elvis impersonation. People think they
are in an unconscious state, when in fact the opposite is true.
You are more alert with the mind very focused and concentrated
somewhat like taking a magnifying glass and concentrating the
sun into such a small spot that you can create fire.

A lady came to me many years ago to stop smoking. She had a
wonderful result and was very happy that she no longer smoked.
However, her friends who were smokers starting saying to her,
“I can’t believe you let him control your mind like that. Why
there ain’t no telling what else he might have told you to do.”
So in all her wisdom the lady called and said, I quote; “I don’t like you controlling my mind. I want you to hypnotize me and give me my smoking back.” Simply amazing don’t you think.

Recently one of my clients came straight from her physician’s
office to my office. I asked her. “What did your doctor say
about you coming to a hypnotist?” Her reply was, “My doctor
said I can’t believe you are going to let him have control of
your mind.” She responded so well to hypnosis for her problem
that she wasn’t about to quit the hypnosis.

Fortunately, the truth of the matter is that the hypnotist is never in control. A hypnotic suggestion works only if you accept it, and the therapist cannot make you do something you would not do consciously, something that goes against your moral code or religious beliefs, for example. The practitioner’s goal is to help you use your own mind to solve problems, rather than give you the answers. If you have ever day dreamed then you have been in hypnosis.

Massage of the Joints

Stiff and swollen joints can be cured by massage combined with mechanical movements. Massage is, however, not recommended in serious inflammatory cases of the joints and in tubercular joints. It should also be avoided in infectious diseases like diphtheria and gonorrhoea which cause formation of pus as massage may spread the pus to the entire system.

Sprains and bruises can be cured by massage. In these cases, affected parts should first be bathed with hot water for 15 to 30 minutes. Next the massage should be done for a few minutes. Gentle stroking and kneading is recommended on and around the injured tissues. Fractures can also be treated through massage.

This form of massage is of great help in atrophy of the muscles which usually follows if the
muscles are not used for any length of time. This condition may also be brought about by
injuries, diseases of the joints, inflammation of the muscles and nerves, and by too long use of
cats, bandages and splints.

A human being carries one -half of the weight of his body in the form of muscular tissues.
One-fourth of the blood supply circulates in the muscles. When one gets a good massage
treatment, the muscles get regenerated and are then capable of holding half of the blood supply.

Massage thus provides additional nourishment to feed the muscular tissues, helping them to
grow strong. Tapping, striking, and vibrating help the muscle to develop its contractile power.

Muscle massage is brought by first effleurage, kneading, followed by tapotement. Later, active
and passive movements are given.

Massage is employed for eliminatng muscle contraction and for breaking of adhesions. A little
moderate kneading, and percussion cause muscles to contract and become stronger. Deep
circular kneading and vibration loosens the muscles. Kneading under and round the muscles
breaks up adhesions.
